Gas Cells

Gas Cells

A gas cell is a tube filled with a pure gas or gas mixture of known pressure.  The wavelength absorption lines of the gas species we use are accurately known (subpicometer), narrow, and insensitive to environmental conditions. Wavelength References, Inc. is an industry leader in providing a full breadth of NIST traceable gas cells of all types and configurations.

Some examples of uses for gas cells include:

  • Tunable laser calibration
  • Sensing system calibration
  • Reference for chemical detector or medical instrumentation
  • Optical instrument calibration source (wavelength, dispersion, etc)

Gas species include acetylene (1510nm - 1540nm), hydrogen cyanide (1528nm - 1563nm), carbon monoxide, water, hydrogen fluoride (1260nm - 1340nm), methane, hydrogen chloride, ammonia, and mixtures. Other gases may be available on request.

Path lengths match the absorption strength of a particular gas or gas mixture and come in 3cm, 5cm, 16.5cm, and 80cm glass tubing, as well as 3cm copper tubing for corrosive gases.  Other path length may be available on request.

Custom faceplate material is available for extended operation in the infared to >4 microns and can also come in sapphire for corrosive gases.

Wavelength Reference, Inc gas cells can be ordered coupled to fiber optic cables, with built in detectors, or as a bare absorption tube.
