MR318 MRI-Compatible Fiber Optic Rotary Encoder for Extreme Electromagnetic Environments

Micronor's new MR318 non-metallic fiber optic rotary encoder is designed specifically for use in motion control systems operating in extreme electromagnetic fields.  Medical diagnostic and research applications include MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or NMR tomography (nuclear magnetic resonance) imaging systems.  Industrial applications include electromagnetic phase or similar separation processes.  The encoder also serves as the control feedback for pneumatic or hydraulic drive systems purposely operated in these same extreme environments and applications.

Based on Micronor's patented ZapFREETM Fiber Optic Rotary Encoder technology (U.S. Patent 7,196,320), the all-optical, totally passive MR318 Encoder/Sensor is identical in design to Micronor's other MR3XX series fiber optic encoders except for its construction of non-metallic materials.  In operation, the "passive" MR318 Encoder optically links to the "active" MR310 ZapFREETM Remote Encoder Interface (REI) Module via a single 62.5/125 multimode fiber link - up to 1000 meters (3280 feet) away. The module offers a wide range of standard interfaces: direct quadrature outputs (both push-pull and line driver), separate multiplier/divider quadrature outputs, two fully-programmable analog outputs (4-20mA and +/-10V), and RS422/RS485 serial interface.
