FiberSensing, a leading supplier of optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based systems for advanced monitoring applications, today announced the release of the new FS 6500 -Single Axis FBG Accelerometer, a sensor specifically designed for applications requiring the measurement of low frequency and small amplitude accelerations.
Sensor
The new accelerometer was designed to allow outdoor installation under severe conditions and with no extra protection. The robust design of this sensor meets the IP68 protection standards and includes aluminum case and input and output fiber optic armor cables. It provides high accuracy and high resolution measurements, and total fiber optic design ensuring intrinsic immunity to electric sparks and EMI/RFI and no ignition risk. The high sensitivity and linearity, as well as the flat frequency response and low transverse sensitivity of this new accelerometer make it suited to a large range of monitoring applications, including ambient vibration monitoring of civil structures.
Integration
Compatible with most standard FBG measurement units, the accelerometer combines compact size and high resistance to corrosion and harsh environments with long-term reliability. It is also appropriate for remote sensing being possible to locate it several kilometers away from the measurement unit. It offers intrinsic multiplexing capability that allows the concatenation of a large number of FBG sensors in a single optical fiber. This sensor is, therefore, particularly suitable for difficult-to-reach locations and large scale sensing networks.
With proper accessories provided by FiberSensing, a compact in series mounting of two or three accelerometers in transversal directions is also possible, so vibration can be measured simultaneously along multiple-axis.
