Danish company measures lightning strikes
Fledgling technology company North Sensor is developing lightning sensor products which provide detailed measurement information of lightning strikes.
Fledgling Danish technology company North Sensor A/S, which was established just eight months ago, is focussing on lightning sensor products which provide detailed measurement information that can be used to assess damage, and repair needs, more efficiently. The unique lightning sensors provide much more detailed information about a lightning strike than the ordinary "strike/no strike" information, reports Ugens Erhverv. The technology is based on the use of a magneto-optical phenomenon called the Faraday effect to measure the peak current and energy in a lightning strike, as well as the amount of charge delivered and the rise time (speed of voltage change). The technology is especially suited for use on radio/television towers, wind turbines etc. Ugens Erhverv also writes that the aircraft industry is beginning to show an interest in the technology. By providing more detailed measurement parameters of a lightning strike, it can become evaluated which strikes are likely to effect equipment - and to what extent. Furthermore, repair activities can become more efficient as well as saving money by helping avoid unnecessary replacement of unaffected parts.
