Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments and has emerged as top 5 academic/research institution in India. A state-of-the-art fiber-optics-laboratory is established at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India. This lab has the capability spanning advanced characterization of optical fiber & based devices to the research level experiments. Presently, this laboratory is involved towards the development of optical fiber sensor. The research is mainly focused on the development of FBG/PCF/nano wire/fiber optic smart structure sensor for civil/mechanical engineering applications as well as sensor which can monitor multiple analyte without any cross sensitivity for environment control. In another project, research is focused on the applications of advanced optical fiber technologies to develop Bio-sensors.
