LABORATORY OF  COMPOSITES AND SMART STRUCTURES

ETS. INGENIEROS AERONAUTICOS

UNIVERSIDAD POLITECNICA DE MADRID

This group of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) is, composed by 12 people as permanent staff, and a similar number of PhD students. The group is leaded by Prof. Güemes, and they have worked actively on Composites since 1983, and  in the field of Smart Structures since 1994. They keep frequent contacts, summer stays and student exchanges with Stanford  and other american universities.

Recent international projects.

1996-1998 : EC project ‘ Smart Wind Turbine Blades’ (JOR·- CT96_0104), as principal contractor and responsible for sensor development. Main achievement were:

·       Set-up of a facility for writing fibre Bragg grating, by the phase mask procedure  (Jan 97)

·       Design and construction of a FBG Interrogation system, with a ELED source and a Fabry-Perot tunable filter (Dec 97)

·       Manufacturing of a 12 m. long wind turbine blade, with 12 embedded FBG sensors, and a similar number of piezoelectric wafers.

References 10 to 15 give details the obtained results.

1998-2000 : EC Project ‘ Process efficient  Regulation for Economical Composites Technologies (PERFECT)’, ( BE 4048), as subcontractor of CASA-Airbus for the development of fibre optic sensors for cure monitoring and resin flow measurements. Main achievements were:

·       Development of an intensity based sensor to monitor the cure of the resin by detecting the changes in its refractive index (Patent 9802520/1)

  • Development of a fibre optic system to monitor the resin flow during the RTM project, actually being used in the development of some RTM parts for the Airbus A380

References 2 and 8  relates to these developments.

2001- 2003: Euclid RTP 3.20 project on ‘Active Health Monitoring System (AHMOS)’, probably the largest coordinated R&D effort (9 Meuros), on SHM systems for aircrafts and vehicles. We are involved in several work packages concerning optical systems development, and we are responsible of the WP ‘Signal Processing’.

2002-2004 European Space Agency project on: ‘Fiber optic sensors for cryogenics composite tanks’. Responsible for development and qualification at LH2 temperature of strain, temperature and leaks detection fiber optic Bragg grating sensors.

2002- 2005: EC Growth project on ‘Bond Assisted Single Step Assembly (BASSA)’, together with Fokker, Sonaca, Gamesa, NLR and Univ of Delft. Our main tasks will be qualification testing of adhesive for composite structures, modelling and full scale structural tests.

2005- 2008 EC Growth project on ‘ Aircraft Reliability Through Intelligent Materials Applications (ARTIMA)’ , leaded by Gamesa. Our group is responsible for implementing a damage detection system by FOS, and for active damping

2005- 2008 EC Growth project on ‘ Advanced Low Cost Aircraft Structures (ALCAS)’, leaded by Airbus UK. Our group is responsible for instrumenting composite structures with fiber optic sensors

2006- 2009 EC SSA  project on ‘ SHM in Action’.  Our group is the Coordinator of the proposal,  and responsible for the Fiber Optic Sensors module.
