Multitel is an Innovation Centre specialized in photonics, computer networks, as well as image, speech and signal processing

Multitel was founded in 1995 from a European initiative supported by the Walloon Government, and became an independent Research Centre in 1999. Multitel's activities include applied research as well as business services and consultancy.
Regarding R&D activities, Multitel's multidisciplinary teams of high-skilled engineers develop various applications in the following areas:

Applied Photonics: design and prototyping of optical fibre lasers and amplifiers, passive optical components (fibre Bragg gratings, mode converters, etc.) and optical sensors. Issued from a telecom background, the group's core activity is today the development of fibre lasers for medical (surgery, dermatology), environmental (LIDAR) and manufacturing (stereolithography, laser ablation ...) applications as well as optical sensors for medical (biomolecule screening and health parameter monitoring), environmental (pollutant detection) and structural monitoring (e.g. for aerospace), both in planar and optical fibre technology;

• Speech and Signal Processing: speech centric multimodal interaction, real-time asset tracking, multisensor data fusion;

• Image processing : image and video content analysis, dynamic scene understanding and behaviour recognition, user-based multimedia content classification, performance evaluation for video systems, machine vision;

• Computer networks :
Wireless networks (WLAN solutions, Wi-Fi), IP telephony and VoIP.

Moreover, Multitel is internationally recognized for its active involvement in the European Research Area, with twenty projects in FP6 (among which eight are still in progress), three in FP7, as well as in the EUREKA initiative and other national and regional programmes.

The Applied Photonics department is still working for five projects as a partner and is leading the OFSETH project (http://www.ofseth.org/). For more information on Multitel's activity in research programmes, please visit http://www.multitel.be/?page=projets and download our "European Research Projects" leaflet.

In addition to this R&D activity, Multitel organizes trainings and conferences in order to inform people of the latest technology. Multitel is also the first Red Hat Certified training centre in Belgium.
